Winter is the quietest and often the most rewarding time to drive in Albania: empty coastal roads, snowy Alps two hours from a mild Tirana, and motorways free of summer traffic. Here is what changes between December and February, from the team that hands over the cars at Rinas Airport every day.

Where winter is easy
Tirana, Durrës, Vlorë and the whole coastal strip rarely see snow; daytime temperatures usually sit between 10 and 15°C and the A1 motorway (Tirana to Lezhë and on towards Kosovo) is kept clear all winter. The north-south axis SH4 and SH8 along the coast is likewise dependable. Most winter days you will drive in sunshine with a light jacket on; rent any car in the fleet with confidence.
Where winter is serious: the mountains
The Albanian Alps (Theth, Valbona via the Koman ferry side) and the southeastern mountain roads to Dardhë, Voskopojë and the Greek border passes can hold snow from December to February, with icy mornings and closed passes after storms. If a mountain route is part of your winter plan, choose an SUV (Jeep Renegade or Suzuki Vitara) and ask us the day before: we drive these roads ourselves and will tell you honestly whether the pass is open and which car we would take.
A winter kit we recommend
- Daylight driving on mountain roads: sunrise around 7, dark by 5 in December
- Dipped headlights on at dusk in the valleys, even on the motorway
- Warm layer and water in the car for mountain stretches (signal can drop)
- Fuel above half on any route that leaves the main axis
Christmas and New Year in Albania
The diaspora weeks (mid-December to early January) fill the roads around Tirana and the airport. If you are flying home for the holidays, book early: our winter long-stay rates run from 20 euros per day in January on the economy car, with everything included and no deposit. See the Christmas & New Year car rental page for the full price list.
Winter FAQ
Do I need snow chains for my rental car in Albania?
Not for Tirana, the coast or the motorway. For high mountain routes in deep winter they can be legally required when a pass is snowbound; if your plan includes them, tell us at booking and we will prepare the right car and advice.
Is it worth visiting Albania in winter?
For cities, the coast and food: absolutely, with empty roads and local prices. For the high Alps: only with flexible plans and current road information from us the day you drive.
Are the roads ploughed after snow?
Main axes and the motorway are cleared within hours. Mountain passes can take a day or more after heavy snow; that is exactly the check we do for you on WhatsApp before you set off.
