Montenegro is the easiest foreign trip from a Java Rentals car: the border at Shkodër (Muriqani) or at Hani i Hotit sits 2.5 to 3 hours from Tirana, the Adriatic coast of Budva and Kotor is spectacular, and taking one of our cars across is a simple, official add-on arranged before you drive.

The short version
- Tell us at booking: we add the cross-border permit, 20 euros for Montenegro
- Bring your passport and the car papers we hand you
- The Green Card insurance is sold by the border police at the border itself (cash)
- Unlimited kilometres are included, so the day trip costs only the permit and fuel
Destinations from Tirana
- Podgorica: about 3 hours, the capital, good for a half-day city stop
- Budva: about 4 hours, beaches and the old town, busiest in July and August at the border crossing
- Kotor: about 4 hours 30, the fjord-like bay and its walled old town, our favourite of the three
- Durmitor & Žabljak: a long day (5 to 6 hours), best as an overnight trip for the mountains
Practical notes from our fleet team
Queues at the border peak on summer weekends and around Orthodox Easter: cross before 9 in the morning or after 6 in the evening. Speed cameras exist on the Montenegrin coast road; fines are the renter's responsibility, as everywhere. Fuel is slightly cheaper in Montenegro, but we still ask for the car back with the same fuel level you started with: same-to-same, as on every Java Rentals rental.
Montenegro FAQ
Can I drive a Java Rentals car to Montenegro?
Yes, with the cross-border permit added at booking (20 euros for Montenegro). The permit fee covers the paperwork releasing the car for foreign travel; Green Card border insurance is bought at the border from the police, not from us.
Do I also pay for Kosovo or North Macedonia?
Each country is its own permit: 20 euros each for Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia. Greece is 100 euros and other countries 150 euros. Tell us all the countries you plan to visit and we add them in one go.
Is the border open 24 hours?
The main crossings to Montenegro (Muriqani and Hani i Hotit) are open around the clock, but daylight crossings are faster and calmer.
