Sarandë is the gate of the Albanian Riviera: white beaches above the Ionian, the slow scenic road from Vlorë, Ksamil and Butrint a short drive south. Here is the honest, up-to-date guide to driving from Tirana to Sarandë in a rental car.

The route at a glance
- Distance: about 280 km one way
- Driving time: 4.5 to 6 hours without long stops
- Roads: SH4 to Fier, then your choice: the coastal SH8 over the Riviera (Vlorë – Himarë – Sarandë) or the inland route via Tepelenë and Gjirokastër
- Fuel: start full from Tirana; the last cheap and reliable stations are around Fier and Vlorë — on the Riviera stretch stations are sparse
- Best car: any of them — the SH8 is paved end to end. An automatic (all our fleet except the Vitara) makes the curves easier
Two ways to the south: coast or inland
The coast (SH8): the famous Riviera drive. Cliffs above the sea, Llogara pass (about 1,000 m), Dhërmi and Himarë on the way. Sharp curves and slow traffic in summer — count 3 hours from Vlorë to Sarandë and stop often, the views deserve it.
The inland route: via Tepelenë and Gjirokastër, faster and wider, plus a UNESCO stop in Gjirokastër. Many drivers go down inland and return along the coast, so they drive the SH8 views without repeating it.
What to see on the way
- Llogara pass — mountain views straight onto the sea, pine forests, good cafés at the top
- Porto Palermo — a small fortress on a peninsula south of Himarë
- Gjirokastër (inland route) — the stone UNESCO city and its castle
- Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) — a natural spring of deep blue water, 40 minutes inland from Sarandë
- Ksamil and Butrint — the best beaches and a UNESCO ancient city, 30-40 minutes south of Sarandë
When to go
May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, open roads, easy parking. July and August bring full heat and full traffic — leave Tirana early or split the drive with a night in Vlorë or Himarë. The SH8 is paved and open all year; winter rarely affects the coast road.
Can you take a rental to Sarandë?
Yes — the whole south is your playground. Rent at Rinas or in Tirana, drive down on your own plan. How long is the drive from Tirana to Sarandë?
About 280 km. The coastal SH8 takes 5 to 6 hours including photo stops; the inland route via Gjirokastër is often 4.5 to 5 hours.
Is the Riviera road hard to drive?
It is a normal paved road, just curved above the sea. Take it slowly, and drive it in daylight: the views are the point. Any car in our fleet does it comfortably.
Can I pick up the car in Tirana and leave it in Sarandë?

One long day or an overnight stop?
Doable in one long day, but better in two: sleep at Vlorë or Himarë and arrive fresh. Drivers with children usually stop in Vlorë.
